Best Buy

October 29th, 2009 - Be the First Comment!

So I sold my MacBook recently and am going to get a different laptop. I didn’t really like my Mac, but I won’t go into detail. This is more about my experience with Best Buy. Generally I don’t really like to post notes about how crappy some store is because they’re so common, but I will make an exception.

I went there to buy a laptop yesterday and I found the one I wanted so I called one of the people over to help me and he was like I’m on break let me go get someone else so like 5 minutes later someone else comes to help me…then I show him the one I want and I’m like I want the black one.. so he goes into the case thing and he’s like you said the black one right? and I was like yeah, and he’s like okay and gives me a box. I go up to the front and pay for it and then open it up to check it, its white. I go to the exchange thing. It takes like 10 mins for someone to come over and help, she is a manager and I tell her what just happened, she is like oh okay ill send someone to get a black one. She sends this other chick to go get one and I am standing there for like 10 mins.. no communication or anything. I’m just standing there for 5 more minutes and I am like HELLO can someone help me? so someone comes over and asks who was helping me. I point out the manager who was helping me and she asks her about it. the manager gets on the radio to ask the girl she sent to go get a black one where it is. The girl tells her they don’t have black ones. I guess she just didn’t feel the need to tell anyone about it, so I got to just stand there wasting my time. The one I wanted was 14 inch screen and the manager is like we do have a 13.3 inch screen laptop in black that is by Sony, but its 100 dollars more.. and I’m like okay? if I wanted a more expensive smaller laptop I would have asked for that one. At this point I tell her, they are really starting to piss me off so how about I just return it. So finally like 45 mins later I’m out of the store (not counting the 35 mins I spent looking at laptops and waiting for someone to help me) with nothing and 2 days before my account gets credited back.

What I took from this experience is if you can’t pick out the item yourself, you have questions, or you don’t know EXACTLY (model number) what you’re looking for, don’t go to Best Buy.

Delayed posting time

August 20th, 2009 - Be the First Comment!

I haven’t posted in a pretty long time. Summer is responsible for my absence. This summer I enjoyed myself in California doing all kinds of entertaining things. Due the multitude of things I’ve been busy with, I never got around to skinning my WordPress blog to look like my website until today. I still need to do some more things to this page, but at least it looks uniform now!

To help me learn more about WordPress I watched some of the CSS Tricks webcasts on skinning WordPress which helped me out a little. I already knew most of the information that was contained within them, however they would be quite useful for someone just starting with WordPress. There are three separate parts if you want to check them out.

I also wanted to discuss another topic in this blog that has to do with work. I enjoy working on websites and doing almost anything computer related. I also enjoy doing something new that stretches my skills or makes me learn something new. Fortunately at my job I get this opportunity often. Before the summer began I finished a Google Maps project where I work. It was an awesome experience. I researched and learned how to integrate layers into a Google Map which allowed me to add a layer of buildings over the map. I also made a side bar to add/remove other layers dynamically ,like bike paths and shuttle routes. The buildings are clickable to allow you to see more information about them as well. Finally I added a search in the sidebar to search for buildings. Figuring it all out took about a month while I also worked on some other projects. To make it easier for others I wrote a guide on working with Google Maps for work. With their permission, I have added a copy of the documentation to my website. It is under theĀ tutorial section of this site. It has explanations and code examples to make it easy for you to learn what I learned. It also includes a resource section for further advancement or research. The map I made can be found at http://search.missouristate.edu/map/, feel free to check it out! I feel lucky to have such a fun job.
